Lil B at the Pitchfork Music Festival. This was one of my favorite moments of the weekend. Not because I necessarily loved his performance (there’s a not-so-small degree of craft that’s undeniably absent) but because it was fun watching people react to him. He says things like “Put your hands in the air if you love life!” and “How many of you many fellas out there respect women?!” and the crowd just laps it up. The guy in front of me was making heart gestures with his hands and throwing up the peace sign. Young girls beside me howled in approval. B’s absurdist schtick is usually present (“Bitches on my dick ‘cause I look like J.K. Rowling” got a big laugh) but there are moments when it melts away to reveal something pretty honest and hopeful that people seem to crave. I don’t know if it works because it plays off the silly stuff or how many kids are there just to hear “Ellen Degeneres” but it felt like a sizable chunk of the audience actually appreciated what he had to say about striving for happiness and honoring one another and, I dunno, I guess I think that’s pretty #based.
